Cobalt - DRAW THIS AGAIN

Description

PEOPLE.
I MADE THE THING.
:happybounce:

As promised, here is the "Before and After meme" of my character Cobalt in celebration of my 5 years on DeviantArt! Whoo!

On the left, a drawing I made for an art class in middle school. I remember being really proud of it, and honestly, I still kind of am.
If I remember right, the project was supposed to be of "us" as superheroes or something, but really I just used it as an excuse for me to draw Cobalt (a character I was designing), since I wanted to be like all the cool kids on DA and have an original character, haha! It was one of the first times I even attempted a background in wood pencils, not to mention the pose and shading was all stuff I was only just starting to play with.

On the right, Cobalt again, but with her updated design (with curly, messy, GORGEOUS hair! :la: )
Spend probably over 20 hours on it, starting off with a base sketch, inking and then colouring in Photoshop (my method of choice).

Quite the change, huh? So what happened?

Well, to start ... PRAISE THE CTRL-Z! I started doing digital art about three years ago, and I gotta say, it's great fun. There's just so much you can do with digital art and I'm learning new stuff all the time!
To continue, refs. All the refs. I learned the importance of using reference images to build shapes and make good looking proportions.
I think in this image alone, I used at least 12; some for clothing, some for shading and lighting, 2 or 3 for body poses and a TON for the flames and smoke. They really do help people!
To end, practice! Only way to get better is to draw, even when you feel like what you're drawing isn't what you want it it be; you have to get over that wall! Honestly, I still feel like I'm climbing it, but trust me, looking back on how far you've come ... it will have been worth it.

So yeah, DA ... has been a huge part of my journey as an artist.
Growing up, I was always that awkward, tall girl who always felt kind of out of place. Growing up, I had (and still have, to some extent) bad anxiety, and would often burst into tears when I was stressed out, especially at school. I had low self-esteem, so DA was a real morale booster for me. Getting comments, and favs on stuff that I drew ... it was something I really appreciated.
I was able to gain more confidence, try new things, even go as far as to make a comic! Without the feedback from you people on DA, I don't know if I would have gotten that far.

It was thanks to art and drawing that I went from being the "girl who cried a lot" to "the girl who could draw" in highschool.

So ...thanks to everyone for being a part of that.

Here's to many more years of art!
Who knows, maybe in 5 years, I'll make this a three-part meme! ;)

WOW! that is a maaassive improvement, I'm so happy for you! :happybounce: that character looks super badass!
also side note, I relate to your description so much. I was also the weird tall girl in school, especially middle school ahah
Teachers would line us up from short to tall and I was always last along with this other girl, but she looked like a supermodel. I was extremely awkward next to her, and it was very noticeable ^^' it's safe to say I struggled with self esteem for a long time
probably part of the reason I got into drawing so much though hehe
let's keep practising and improving together! o/
